The critically acclaimed third album was Produced by Drummer/Vocalist Miss Randall, and mixed by Jeremy Blair (Guns n’ Roses), Possessor also includes collaborations from Claudio Simonetti (Goblin), Waldemar Sorychta (Grip Inc) and Alex Mitchell (Circus of Power). Rusty Eye at the Down n Out Review

Metal Assault

By Andrew Bansal

May 26th 2014, Down & Out Bar, Los Angeles CA: Based out of Atlantic City NJ, metal quartet Hammer Fight are currently on a US tour and made their way to Los Angeles to headline Metal Monday at the Down & Out Bar in DTLA last night, along with local support acts Panties and Rusty Eye. Put together by prolific local metal promoters Church Of The 8th Day and Thee Static Age, the show promised an entertaining Monday night out for supporters of the metal underground in the area.

Hollywood’s very own horror-themed progressive metal trio Rusty Eye originated in Mexico City in 1995 and transitioned to becoming an LA band a decade later while still keeping their roots intact. Of late, they went through some lineup instabilities but are now getting back into the groove by playing the occasional local gigs, with original drummer/vocalist Miss Randall returning on the kit. Here they played an 8-song set consisting of three covers off of the latest Rusty Eye album ‘Saca El Cobre’, their all-covers tribute to a selection of Mexican music groups/artists, along with a few of their original tunes including a Spanish version of ‘Mr. Cannibal’. The covers are clearly targeted towards their Spanish-speaking fan base and for people unfamiliar with the original artists or the language, it’s a little hard to follow these tunes and takes a bit of getting used to. So for me, the original Rusty Eye tunes still stood out as the more enjoyable parts of the set, specially ‘Mr. Cannibal’ wherein Mr. Rust’s bass line is strongly reminiscent of Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris, and ‘Mondo Cane’ in which guitarist Baron Murtland gets to express himself fully as the band lays into some proggy jamming. Performance-wise, all three members were solid but it was clear to me that they can reach higher levels if they play on a more regular basis. Rusty Eye is undoubtedly an intriguing band in its own unique, weird ways, and it’s be good to see them back playing shows again.

WHAT’S WHAT: A product of Mexico City, Mexico, RUSTY EYE are the epitome of hard work in the music business. With a “make it or break it” attitude, the three piece could have gone anywhere when they left Mexico, but they went straight for the throat of the Heavy Metal scene in America and claimed Hollywood, California as base of operations. Nobody puts RUSTY EYE in a corner, meaning that you can’t slap a label on this band and lump them in with anybody else. The current lineup, consisting of Mr. Rust (bass/vocals), Miss Randall (drums/vocals) and Baron Murtland (guitars) broke the mold with the release of Stendhal Syndrome (2007), and followed strong with the impossible to wear out Possessor (2009), all on their own imprint Epoché Records. Constant work has earned them the respect of metal fans the world over, and also the love of critics in both the music and horror world, as they have done things the old school way, bypassing all of the bullshit and devoting themselves to standing out by writing and playing the gnarliest music possible. Now a certified legend in the Hollywood scene, RUSTY EYE have taken to the legendary Rainbow to record and unleash upon a new live album upon us. Live at The Rainbow MMX is 70-odd minutes of succulent metal, tinged with punk rock, including all the platters that matter from the fifteen-plus career of these DIY heroes. If this band isn’t already one of your favorites, they damn well need to be. (Bubbs Harris)

rustyeye6Kiss Army Warehouse, to Kiss nerds what Craigslist is to prostitute-slaughtering serial killers, have an issue of LA-based music paper Rock City for sale on their site, due to the fact that the issue (dated March 2006) carries a large Kiss article and a copy of one of Paul Stanley’s awful self portrait paintings on its cover. But also featuring on the cover are Rusty Eye, the horror metal band formed in Mexico in 1995 who later relocated to Hollywood.

Now, this could easily stack up as just another cool piece of memorabilia for the band members to pick on in their twilight years, yet there is a greater evil at work….in a good way of course. Continue reading

Rusty Eye‘s experimental track “Rituales de Sangre” is featured on the trailer for the movie “I Hate L.A.” by Brenda & Elisabeth Fies.

“Rituales de Sangre” is taken off Rusty Eye’s Possessor album, available at: Amazon.com and Apple iTunes

About the movie:

Big laughs mix with gory kills in this TWILIGHT ZONE-esqe suspenser when tension in Hollywood boils over and its inhabitants finally reveal the flawed monsters they really are.

I HATE L.A. is a bold new feature film of ten interlocking horror vignettes written and directed by six lady directors.

Like PARIS JE T’AIME, each filmmaker set her short story in a specific region of L.A. county. Unlike the beautiful city of light, love, and culture, Los Angeles is perhaps the most hated and berated metropolis in the world. Continue reading
